Shackleford, winner of the 2011 Preakness, trained at WCTC from Sept. 25, 2009, until May 27, 2010. Sired by Forestry, and grandson of Storm Cat, Shackleford's win in the Preakness and his pacesetting performance in the Kentucky Derby, continues the legacy of Storm Cat's offspring. With career earnings of over one million dollars, Shackleford has had eight starts, with three firsts, and one second.

Shackleford's biggest challenge while on the farm was gatework. "One day he just walked through the damn gate," is how Webb put it in an interview with a local paper. By the time he was finished with his training at WCTC, he was a race-ready, sane, sound colt, primed for a career.

Webb, Travis, and the rest of the staff at Webb Carroll Training Center want to congratulate Mike Lauffer, W.D. Cubbedge and Dale Romans on an exciting, down-to-the-wire win at the Preakness, and to thank them for the opportunity to train a great athlete like Shackleford.

Did You Know?

Shackleford isn't the first Classic winner to graduate Webb Carroll Training Center. 2001 graduate, War Emblem, received his training in South Carolina's mild winter climate here at WCTC. He went on to capture the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness in 2002.
